The bucks’ party is what most people in Australia call it, in other countries it is often referred to as a bachelors’ party or stag night.
It is also referred to as a bucks’ night in Australia or a stag party, a stag night or a stag do in many commonwealth nations like the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and many nations.
In South Africa, it is also known as a bull’s party. These names refer to a tradition that has been in existence since ancient Greece, in the 5th century BC in ancient Sparta.
It began with soldiers toasting each other on the eve of the day a friend was about to wed.
This bachelor party was to commemorate or bid farewell to one of their mates that was no longer going to be single and in essence leaving the of a ‘stag’ status. It is a celebration of a man’s last moments as a bachelor. This party consists of activities that may go beyond the normal intent of the party and the standard social and party gathering elements, which are most commonly gambling, alcohol drinking and also the smoking cigars.
These days the organizers usually include the services of an escort or stripper, a night spent in a strip club. Additionally, pranks and tests and hazing all at the expense of the groom to be are common. This essentially signals that the groom to be is about to be initiated from bachelorhood to marital life.
In the past bachelorhood was more commonly associated with the groom’s life during his adolescent stage. This was as important as important in the past as are high school and college years presently. Marital life on the other hand signifies leaving the irresponsibility of the past life and joining a more responsible group of individuals.
This major task of organising a bucks party is generally left to the male sibling, more often the younger brother because he is yet to be married, or to the best man. Additionally, the task is also left to a person that is close to the groom to be and is well renowned for organizing memorable parties.
It is also important that the activities planned for the bucks’ party is kept secret from the groom. These parties have evolved in such a way that they are nowadays depicted in movies and situation comedies. The activities of these parties may vary from one location to the other.
There may also be a combined party for both the bride and groom but this is quite rare. However, when this takes place it is commonly referred to as a Stag and Doe party. Nonetheless, the bride to be has her separate party known as a Hen party.
In Australia, many bucks’ nights hire the services of a stripper. The groom’s mates may often indulge in heavy drinking and may then subject the groom to multiple humiliating situations, both in public and in private. They may often go as far as strapping the groom naked to a pole and placing him in an air plane destined to a remote location.
